Covenant - We are happy men.

What the fuck happened? How do you go from EBM to pathetic Sythpop ballads?

Let’s recap:

I was first introduced to Covenant with the “United States of Mind” LP. It was fantastic. Great blend of EBM and electronic music. The hooks were catchy and the industrial roots were prevalent.

I started to work backwards and discovered their original EBM past with songs like Theremin on the “Dreams of Cryotank” LP. By this point, they had become a favorite band of mine. The “Sequencer” and “Europa” albums were the icing on the cake.

Then out of nowhere, they lost their edge. I lied to myself and accepted the “Northern Lights” and “Skyshaper” albums as mature releases. The lies stopped when I saw them live in San Diego 2006. Eskil gave a shout out to the wrong city (It’s Vegas you fuck!), was off-key, and was screwing up the lyrics. While that is acceptable in EBM/industrial music, you can’t do that with clean vocals on a Synthpop song.

What came out of this whole experience is two fold:

1) I realized that Joakim is the core of the band, Eskil can’t sing, and Clas is…. well…Clas. .

2) Clas later left Covenant for some reason. Daniel Myer from Haujobb fame has since replaced him.

I hope the old sound comes back….
